DQ8-Recompiled is an experimental native port of Dragon Quest VIII: Journey of the Cursed King, the PlayStation 2 RPG. Built on PS2Recomp, it translates the game's MIPS R5900 code into C++ ahead of time and links it to a runtime that implements the PlayStation 2 services the game relies on, with graphics on SDL3's GPU API or a software reference renderer.

The North American release boots, loads saves and reaches field gameplay, with sound from the game's own drivers; steady performance and full compatibility are still in progress. Nothing from the game is distributed: a launcher checks your own disc image, installs a compiler if one is missing, then translates and builds the game on your computer, for Windows, macOS and Linux, on x86-64 and ARM64. Along the way I work on PS2Recomp itself, and my changes to its memory use, multi-threaded recompilation and thread handling are merged upstream.
